Press Release (May 31,2011)
Oil leakage to the sea confirmed around the curtain wall of the water intake canal of Unit 5 and 6, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
During the patrol of our private port approximately at 8:00 am on May 31st,
2011, a TEPCO employee confirmed oil leakage to the sea around the curtain
wall of the water intake canal of Unit 5 and 6, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power Station. We reported the issue to Futaba Wide-area Fire Headquarters
and Fukushima Coastguard Office.

While the amount of the oil and the area are still being confirmed, we are
preparing oil fences to prevent the wide-spread of the oil to the outer
sea.

The cause of the leakage is under investigation in detail, taking into
account the possibility that the tanks and pipes for heavy oil became
damaged due to the earthquake on March 11th, when we were supplying heavy
oil to the two heaviy oil tanks of Unit 5 and 6 (capacity: 960 kiloliter
for each).
