Press Release (Jun 17,2011)
Submission of Report regarding Transfer of High Level Radioactive Water in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to the Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility
Currently there is much high level radioactive waste water in the turbine
buildings of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. On April 10th, from
the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, we received an order of
submission of a report regarding necessity and safety assessment on
transfer of high level radioactive water in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power Station to the Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility, and
a principle for a permanent storage method and treatment facilities.
(previously announced on April 15th, 2011)

On April 18th, a leakage block measure, etc. for the Process Main Building
in the Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility was completed. Based
on the above order, we compiled the results and reported to the Minister
of Economy, Trade and Industry. The contents of the report were confirmed
by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.
(previously announced on April 19th, 2011)

Since April 19th, we have continuously conducted a transfer of high level
radioactive water from the turbine building of Unit 2 to the Process Main
Building of the Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility.

After that, because the water level of the radioactive waste water in the
turbine building of Unit 3 has increased, we have conducted a leakage
block work for the Miscellaneous Solid Waste Volume Reduction Treatment
Building of the Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility to secure
a temporary storage space.
On May 16th, because we completed the leakage block work, etc. we compiled
the results based on the above order and reported to the Minister of
Economy, Trade and Industry. The contents of the report were confirmed by
the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. Thus we started to transfer the
high level radioactive waste water from the turbine building of Unit 3 to
the Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility.
(previously announced on May 16th, 2011)

After that, we had transferred the radio active waste water to the Process
Main Building and the Miscellaneous Solid Waste Volume Reduction Treatment
Building. However, because the water storage in the Process Main Building
was almost full and we found there was a possibility to leak to the nearby
underground passage in the Miscellaneous Solid Waste Volume Reduction
Treatment Building, we interrupted the transfer work.
Under these circumstances, the water level in the turbine buildings of
Unit 2 and Unit 3 has increased. In order to prevent a leakage to the
outside system, we reviewed the water storage level of the Process Main
Building and reported to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.
(previously announced on June 4th, 2011)

We started a transfer of water in the turbine building of Unit 2 to the
main process building since 6:39 PM on June 4th, and a transfer of water
in the turbine building of Unit 3 to the surface condenser of Unit 3 since
6:26 PM on June 5th.
This time, in order to reduce risks of leakage of water in the turbine
buildings of Unit 2 and Unit 3 to the outside system, we reviewed the
water storage level of the Process Main Building and reported to the
Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.
(previously announced on June 8th, 2011)

We stopped the transfer of water in the turbine building of Unit 2 to the
Process Main Building at 8:40 AM on June 16th.
We also stopped the transfer of water in the turbine building of Unit 3 to
the surface condenser of Unit 3 because the water volume reached its full
capacity at 10:44 AM on June 9th. After that, we started a transfer of the
water to the Process Main Building at 10:05 Am on June 14th and stopped
the transfer at 8:46 AM on June 16th.
This time, in order to reduce risks of leakage of water in the turbine
buildings of Unit 2 and Unit 3 to the outside system, we conducted an
evaluation for risks of water leakage from nearby underground passage which
had a possibility to leak to underground water, caused by re-start of water
transfer to the Miscellaneous Solid Waste Volume Reduction Treatment (High
Temperature Incinerator Building). (The water transfer to the Miscellaneous
Solid Waste Volume Reduction Treatment has been interrupted since May 25th.)
We compiled the results and reported to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety
Agency.
