Press Release (Feb 04, 2013)Compensation for Mental Damages Provided for High School Students and the Younger in the Former Emergency Evacuation Preparation Zone

We deeply apologize to the people of Fukushima and broader society for the tremendous inconvenience and anxiety caused by the accident at Fukushima Daiichi and Daini Nuclear Power Stations (hereinafter the "accident").

Regarding the compensation for mental damages in the former Emergency Evacuation Preparation Zone announced in "Compensation Provided According to the Redefined Evacuation Zone (Former Emergency Evacuation Preparation Zone, etc.)" (July 24, 2012), the compensation for mental damages will be provided to high school students and the younger in consideration of the status of school as follows.

1. Eligible individuals
Those who lived in the former Emergency Evacuation Preparation Zone and applies to either of the following.
(1) Junior high school students and the younger as of September 1, 2012*1
(2) High school*2 students of age from 15 to 18 as of September 1, 2012*3
(The period of not attending high school is not subject to compensation.)

2. Damages subject to compensation
Mental damages incurred in school life, etc. due to evacuation

3. Compensation amount
50,000 yen per month (per person) will be paid as compensation for mental damages during the period from September 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013.

4. Dispatch and acceptance of application forms
Based on the information received in the past applications, the application forms will be sent out starting from today to those who were born on April 2, 1994 and later and who lived in the former emergency evacuation preparation zone at the time of the accident. We request those who apply to the requirements specified in section 1 above to fill in the application form and apply for the compensation. If you are applying for the first time or have a change of address, please call "Fukushima Nuclear Compensation Office (Call Center)" below.

*1 Junior high school students and the younger: Those who were born on April 2, 1997 and later.
*2 High school is defined to be a school which "provides higher general education and specialized education according to students' mental and physical development on the foundation of the lower secondary education" (Article 50 of the School Education Act).
*3 Those of age from 15 to 18: Those who were born during the period from April 2, 1994 to April 1, 1997.
