Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2013

Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report (Dec 02, 2013)Water Leak Found in Desalination System (Reverse Osmosis Membrane) at Fukushima Daiichi NPS (First issue and the follow-up information)

At 9:40 Am today (on December 2), a TEPCO employee found water leaking at the pace of 1 drop per second from the air controlled valve gland part at the entrance part of a waste liquid receiving tank in the desalination system (reverse osmosis membrane) No.2 which was installed inside a temporary warehouse at Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

Therefore, we suspended the desalination system at 9:42 AM.

The leakage has confirmed to be stopped at 10:00 AM after this valve was tightened. Later, waste liquid supply pump was activated, and no leakage has been found since 11:58 AM today (December 2). Further, since no abnormality was found on the desalination system No.2 at 12:12 PM on the same day, operation of this system has started.

The leaked water was found over a range of approx. 2m x 0.5m x 1mm, and the amount is estimated to be approx. 1 liter. All of the leaked water has stayed inside the dike of the temporary warehouse, and has not flowed out from the temporary warehouse.

We wiped off the leaked water, of which the radioactive density will be analyzed, using an absorbent.

Since there is a sufficient amount of desalinated water and the other desalination system which is available, the incident will not affect water injection into the reactors.

The investigation of this incident will be ongoing.
