Things you should know more about decommissioning
Question

What happens to the waste and rubble generated in "decommissioning work"?

  • Waste management

Answer

Waste generated in the course of decommissioning is sorted by radiation level and stored onsite at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
At current time, generated waste is sorted based on the type and surface dose, and temporarily stored onsite, but going forward we will be constructing solid waste storage facilities so that priority can be given to storing highly radioactive rubble inside in order to reduce the impact that radiation from waste has on dose levels at site boundaries. We are also constructing a miscellaneous solid waste incinerator facility and volume reduction facility in order to reduce the amount of waste as much as possible by incinerating combustible waste and reducing the volume of metal and concrete waste.
