Things you should know more about decommissioning
Question

How is "radioactive waste" disposed of at the end?

  • Waste management

Answer

Waste generated during the course of decommissioning is separated into rubble and waste generated in the course of purifying and treating contaminated water (secondary waste from water treatment) after which it is sorted again based upon the type of material and radiation levels. After this, it is continually stored in a safe and stable manner upon implementing shielding and leak prevention measures to prevent any impact on the environment.
In regards to disposal, we are currently engaged in research and development in coordination with the Japanese government and other related agencies, and leveraging the results of technical investigations performed both inside and outside of Japan to enable the waste to be disposed of safely in consideration of waste radiation levels and characteristics.
