TEPCO Employee working at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station Tests Positive for Covid-19

It was confirmed today through PCR testing that a Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. employee working at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station has contracted Covid-19.

As Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. is a utility responsible for providing life-line services, we will continue to work to ensure that there is no impact on power provision, the stable operation of power stations, nor the safety of decommissioning work in accordance with our Business Continuity Plan while also keeping the health and safety of employees our number one priority.

At the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station, a Covid-19 Countermeasures Task Force headed by the Site Superintendent has taken measures to prevent the spread of the virus, and we have continued to implement our Business Continuity Plan while also implementing countermeasures to prevent infection and the spread of the virus. This Covid-19 infection of an employee shall not impact the stable supply of power nor the safe operation of power stations. At the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station, all reactor Units 1 through 7 are currently shutdown and fuel is being kept cool and stable in the spent fuel pools.

So as not to cause concern amongst community residents we shall respond suitably to instructions given by health officials and continue to implement countermeasures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 as we strive to maintain stable operation of the power station.

2. Measures already taken
- Sterilization of the office in which the infected employee works
- Shelter-in-place order given to personnel who had contact with the infected employee

3. Main countermeasures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station
-Personnel have been instructed to wear masks while commuting and during work only to remove their masks after returning home in order to thoroughly prevent contracting Covid-19.
-Personnel have been instructed to take their temperature before coming to the office and to keep track of their daily physical condition using health management charts.
-Personnel have been encouraged to frequently sterilize their hands with alcohol, access to work areas in the main administration building has been restricted, and personnel have been instructed to sterilize common-use areas with alcohol after use.
-Personnel are prohibited from traveling, including business trips.
-A shift system is being employed for lunch breaks and the number of people personnel may sit across from while eating has been limited in the cafeteria.
-Operators have been instructed to avoid contact with other employees and contractors.
