The spent fuel pool in the upper part of the reactor building stores fuel rod assemblies that were used to generate electric power. At Unit 1, where a hydrogen explosion occurred, a cover was installed over the entire reactor building in October 2011, to prevent the scattering of radioactive materials from the building. After that, measures to prevent and mitigate rubble fall on the operating floor were completed in November 2020, and the dismantling of the building cover (remaining part) that would interfere with the construction of a large cover was completed in June 2021. Currently, we are working to install the large cover around summer 2025 for the purpose of suppressing dust dispersion and developing a work environment when removing rubble, and suppressing rainwater inflow.

Progress Status

Step 1: Survey of internal state

Dismantling of the cover over the reactor building was completed in December 2017, and preparations have been made for rubble removal.

Step 2 Removal of rubble

Removal of rubble from the center portion on the north side of the operating floor, at the upper part of the reactor building, was begun in January 2018.
Work to support the overhead crane and fuel handling machine on the south side of the operating floor was completed in November 2020.
The dismantling of the building cover (remaining part) that would interfere with the construction of the large cover was completed in June 2021.

Step 3 Construction of a large cover

Goiong forward, we plan to construct a large cover that emcompasses the entire building and remove rubble from under the cover.
