To preserve the local environment, the TEPCO Group implements environmental management through four key approaches: (1) environmental impact assessment, (2) pollutant management, (3) reduction of pollutant emissions, and (4) Risk management. <GRI 306-1, 306-2>

Environmental Assessment

For development projects, we conduct Environmental Assessments from the planning stage in compliance with laws and regulations to minimize environmental impact.

Air Pollution and Water Quality Protection

We monitor emissions from our power generation facilities into the atmosphere and public water bodies through continuous measurement and sampling, ensuring compliance with legal standards. To reduce pollutant emissions, we implement measures related to fuel, equipment, and operational practices.

Waste Management

To reduce the environmental impact of our business activities, the TEPCO Group promotes comprehensive waste management, including the proper handling of PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) waste. The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan has set a target of achieving a waste recycling rate of approximately 95% by FY2025. To contribute to this goal, the TEPCO Group is promoting the recycling of industrial waste and other materials.
We ensure proper storage and management of PCB waste in compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and systematically advance detoxification treatment.

Chemical Substance Management

Through our environmental management system, we monitor emissions, consumption, and inventories of PCB waste, hazardous chemicals subject to the PRTR Law, ozone‑depleting substances, asbestos, and other regulated materials. We ensure proper management of these substances in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and work to reduce emissions by switching to products that do not contain such substances.

Risk Management

To prevent soil and water contamination caused by leakage of hazardous substances, we implement risk management measures such as regular inspections of storage tanks, installation of containment dikes and stop weirs, and preparation of neutralizing agents. We also maintain ledgers for products containing hazardous substances to ensure proper treatment during disposal or replacement.
In response to radioactive contamination resulting from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, we cooperate with the government to advance decontamination, prevent contamination of groundwater flowing within the power station site, and implement a range of measures to prevent the release of contaminated water into the ocean.
